 ALTA MURGIA NATIONAL PARK MURGIA
- Established through the Decree of the President of Italian Republic (D.P.R. - 10 March 2004 - “Decree establishing Alta Murgia National Park”
- Management: Independent Institution regulated through Italian Laws no. 394/91; Organigram: Board of the Directors, Managing Director, Auditing & Accounting, Representatives of the Local Community authorities.
- Natural Network 2000: 125.880 ha (hectares over the area of PSic/ZPS Murgia Alta (High Murgia), Natural Code 2000 IT9120007;
- Area: about 68.077 ha, covering the PSic/ZPS Murgia Alta (High Murgia),divided in three specific protection areas.
- Zone 1 - protected as national heritage because of its unique naturalistic, steep steppe like landscape and its historic/cultural characteristics.
- Zone 2 - protected as national heritage because of its unique naturalistic, agricultural landscape and historic/cultural characteristics.
- Zone 3 - protected as national heritage because of its connection with the local eco/friendly economy and the aims of the national park protection programmes according to the regional regulation on environmental protection policy.
- Territorial Control/Patrolling: Corpo Forestale dello Stato (Forest/Environmental police units reporting to the Local Environmental committee)
- Distances: 30 km from Bari.
- Region: Puglia.
- Provinces: Province of Bari and Province of Barletta, Andria & Trani.
- Municipalities: 13 towns (Altamura ha 12.726, Andria ha 12.070, Bitonto ha 1.967, Cassano Murge ha 3.217, Corato ha 5.433, Gravina in Puglia 7.628, Grumo Appula ha 635, Minervino Murge ha 7.517, Poggiorsini ha 126, Ruvo di Puglia ha 9.992, Santeramo ha 871, Spinazzola ha 3.959, Toritto ha 1.931)
- Communities: North-Western & South-Eastern Murgian community councils.
- Inhabitants: 450.000 people live in the surrounding towns.
- Woodland/Forest areas: 11.000 ha are covered by shrubs, thick conifer and coppice woodland.
- Meadows: the main feature of the Alta Murgia landscape and usually located at about 500 metres above the sea level. They are the typical Southern European steppe like landscape and represent nowadays the last authentic example of this landscape in Italy and in the Mediterranean countries.
- Annual Income per capita: generally higher than the average annual income per capita in the Apulian region and just below the average income of the North-Eastern part of Veneto.
- Army target ranges: located on the 30% of the park area;
